What is Scoliosis?

Scoliosis is a curvature of the spine that can develop in any area from the bottom (lumbar) to the top (cervical) spine.

There is no single cause for scoliosis, but it is most commonly caused by genetics or muscle imbalance.

The severity of the curve and its location will determine the exercises required to correct it.

If you are experiencing scoliosis, consult with your doctor to determine which exercises are best for you. Generally, exercises that improve range of motion and flexibility are recommended. In particular, side-lying spinal traction and manual therapy (massaging) may be beneficial.

Types of Scoliosis: The four most common types of scoliosis

There are four types of scoliosis, based on how the spine curves. They are:

1) idiopathic scoliosis (in which we don't know what caused it),

2) congenital scoliosis (a birth defect in the spine),

3) acquired/acquired spondylolysis (a condition where the spine has become spongy and weak), and 4) degenerative/discogenic scoliosis (a result of spinal arthritis).
